Fly High at Camp Grimes!

Aviation Program

Camp Grimes is the only Scouting America summer camp to offer the Aviation Merit Badge.

Scouts will learn the basic mechanics of flight, how airplanes work, airport infrastructure and operations, and flight communications. They will also learn how to fly a drone, and capture and share aerial images (photos and videos); they will then compete in an obstacle course race. Finally, they will take a trip to an airport “in action”, learn how to “preflight check” an airplane, and – with their parent’s permission – actually fly a light aircraft with a certified flight instructor.

In addition to receiving the Aviation Merit Badge, Scouts will become FAA TRUST certified to fly drones recreationally; and, if they choose, go on to take their FAA Part 107 test and fly drones commercially. For example, they can take aerial photos and videos of homes for sale for a local real estate agent, group shots at weddings, etc. Finally, Scouts that are potentially interested in a career in aviation can join the FAA “Young Eagles” program – where they can qualify for free ground school on their way to their pilot’s license…and, potentially, earn a college scholarship as well!

There is a $150 (to cover the cost of a Tello drone the Scout will get to take home). Must be 14 years of age.  A Balsa plane kit will be provided.
